- Open ceiling plenums and roof cavities. A roof cavity above a dropped ceiling, or an open ceiling plenum, lets blown-in or batt material be added without disturbing finishes below, since there is direct access from above.
- Closed exterior wall cavities. Existing finished walls with an empty or under-filled cavity can be dense-packed through small access holes drilled from inside or outside, adding insulation without removing the wall finish.
- Metal building roof and wall systems. An existing metal building with thin or degraded blanket insulation can have added insulation, a new liner system, or thermal spacer blocks installed against the existing structure.
- Building envelope air-sealing at accessible penetrations. Retrofit air-sealing targets accessible penetrations, transitions, and gaps identified during assessment, improving air barrier continuity without opening the whole assembly.

Projects we scope differently
- If the existing insulation is wet, contaminated, or physically degraded, adding new material over it does not solve the underlying problem.
- A building with a single, well-defined area of damage, such as a torn vapor retarder or a displaced batt after other trade work, does not need a whole-building retrofit; a targeted repair addresses that kind of localized issue.
- A new building under construction is not a retrofit candidate since the envelope doesn't exist yet to upgrade; that work is new-construction insulation, installed during the original build sequence.
Work in buildings that stay open
In an existing building, retrofit work starts with an assessment of what insulation is already there, its condition, and how the cavities or roof are accessible. We identify whether the existing envelope can simply be added to, such as dense-packing a wall cavity or adding a layer over an existing roof deck, or whether degraded existing material needs addressing first. Work is planned in sections so the areas being insulated at a given time can be closed off from the rest of the operating building.
Access, phasing, and safety on site
- Phasing. Retrofit work is broken into sections that match the areas of the building that can be closed off at a given time, so one section is completed and reopened to use before the next section starts, keeping the rest of the operation running.
- Access. Since most of the existing envelope is already closed in behind finishes, access usually means finding or creating small entry points, working from an existing roof surface, or reaching an open ceiling plenum rather than opening full wall sections.
- Scheduling. Work is typically scheduled around the building's operating hours or slower periods, since the sections being retrofitted are usually the ones where the crew and equipment need clear, uninterrupted access while material is blown or dense-packed into the cavity.

Does a retrofit remove the existing insulation first?+
Not usually. A retrofit typically adds to or upgrades existing insulation without removing it, as long as the existing material is dry and in reasonable condition. Wet, contaminated, or badly degraded existing insulation is removed first, which becomes a separate part of the job.
How do you add insulation to a wall that's already finished?+
Material is dense-packed through small holes drilled from inside or outside the wall, filling the cavity without removing the interior or exterior finish. The holes are then plugged and finished to match the existing surface.
